Blog 10

THE MOST INTERESTING THING I LEARNED WHILE BLOGGING IS ................................................ all the ingredients that make up the food I eat it really surprised me how much is actually in m food. It was kind of cool to blog every week, the research was defenitley a pain. I also learned that what I effects the world because what it takes to make one meal can ultimatley deplete natural resources around the world including animals. As far as me and food I already knew that what I eat and don't eat could ultimatley effect what happens to my body. but, the blog enforced that so now I try to eat fast food as less as possible because all the grease, and fatty foods is not good in the long term, I go to the gym now. It's hard to cut out all junk food but its a process, im still working on it but without the blog I don't think I would have made this drastic of a change by myself . THANKS DR.SMITH

Blog 9 (Sweet potatoes is the Winner)

My Meal is painfully(hurts me to say) unhealthy. But, in the previous blog I described how I could make my meal healthier. honestly, I've tried onven fried chicken and its very tasty. I'm not gonna say im going to actually switch over to healthy fried chicken but occassionaly I will because while chicken is in the oven it cooks better and its faster.NOW!!! as far as the maccaroni and cheese with low fat chedder cheese and cottage cheese was not very good. I think I'll stick with the fattening way of making maccaroni and cheese I will just eat less of it. In the previous blog Sweet potatoes seemed to be the healthiest food in my meal. OF COURSE because its natural, its grown from natures essentials, so out of my WHOLe meal sweet potatoes is both enviormentally safe, and good for the world's economy because if the more people find out that it is healthy and both sweet more people will buy it the econom of the world will grow due to a positive, healthy vegetable lol!!!

What Did I learned from Blog 5-7

I learned where many of my food comes from and I noticed that none of my food is made in New York. My food comes from diffrent states all around the United States. I also learned that the place where my chese is made, tabocco is made also. These blogs were very beneficial because it let me research where all my food came from, how it was made, and who made it

Blog 8

My meal is defenitley not 100% healthy, the fried chicken is consumed with trans fat(Trans fat is the common name for a type of unsaturated fat with trans fatty acids). Fried chicken is considered : as healthy as the alternative to animal fat". this is bad because too much tran fat can cause heart diseases. but, just recently we have found away to eat good fried chicken without the trans fat YESSSS!, I said by golly we have found a way. To make fried chicken less fattening and risky you can bake it in olive oil or butter and no oil.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_fat

http://docgerrytan.com/2007/03/22/how-safe-is-a-fried-chicken-check-if-its-cooked-with-trans-fat/

Recipe for Oven Fried Chicken:

Cooking spray 2/3 cup instant oats 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon mustard powder 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 4 (4-ounce) boneless skinless chicken breast halves 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 cups frozen green peas, steamed or microwaved until hot
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray.
In a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish, combine oats, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, paprika, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside. Brush each chicken breast with Dijon mustard. Add chicken to oat mixture with tongs and turn to coat both sides. Transfer chicken to prepared baking sheet and spray with cooking spray.
Bake 30 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through. http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_32656,00.html

AND, Maccaroni and cheese is defenitley not healthy. Cheese is fattening because of all the cholestrol in cheese can lead to a heart attack, Cholesterol is Cholesterol is a sterol (a combination steroid and alcohol). Macaroni and cheese can be healthy too. If you bake it and use reduced fat cheese.

Recipe for baked Maccaroni and cheese:

1/2 pound elbow macaroni 3 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons flour 1 tablespoon powdered mustard 3 cups milk 1/2 cup yellow onion, finely diced 1 bay leaf 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1 large egg 12 ounces sharp cheddar, shredded 1 teaspoon kosher salt Fresh black pepper Topping: 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup panko bread crumbs
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large pot of boiling, salted water cook the pasta to al dente. While the pasta is cooking, in a separate pot, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and mustard and keep it moving for about five minutes. Make sure it's free of lumps. Stir in the milk, onion, bay leaf, and paprika. Simmer for ten minutes and remove the bay leaf. Temper in the egg. Stir in 3/4 of the cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Fold the macaroni into the mix and pour into a 2-quart casserole dish. Top with remaining cheese. Melt the butter in a saute pan and toss the bread crumbs to coat. Top the macaroni with the bread crumbs. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and rest for five minutes before serving. Remember to save leftovers for fried Macaroni and Cheese.

Candied yams are defenitley healthy, they are high in potassium, and vitamin A and these two ingredients help protect against heart attack and stroke.

So I guess with all the fatty acids in my meal this one meal cancels out all of them and I still recieve my recomended dose of healthy food.

Nature as Media

Justin, Richelle and I visited the Veterbrate Orgin exhibit and watched a documentary.

The synopsis of the exhibit was about: Animals with a backbone and a braincase. the first one which originated 500 million years ago fish arose, 150 million years ago animals walked on land and 360 millions years ago moved on land.

Pathos: the emotion I felt was that I was intrigued by everything I saw, they had every veterbrate evoulution dated back as far as 500 million years ago. They had an exhibit (that you can touch) for the back bone veterbrate to the model like egg with the amibion tight membrane. this exhibit was very interesting.

Ethos: The exhibitshands on feel to it really built up its ethos, it had many diagrams and models that we were able to touch and move around. They had the touch screen computers which allowed us access to any information about what was in front us. we actually felt involved with the exhibit and that s what made me like it so much!!!!!

Facts fom the movie include(Logos): PreHistoric Veterbrates were discovered by fossils(they included the characteristics of having brain cases, backbones, new jaws, four limbs, ambion which is water tight membranes. The first fish with a backbone was called a placoderm. they also spoke about the harsh destrutction of dinosaurs and that only birds have survived since that time. one fact that wasreall striking was that humans are worst than the dinosaurs when it comes to destroying the earth.
Answer to question 4:
The media form I chose is movies. Each and exhibit had a type of film or documentary to state a fact or an opinion about an exhibit. In my opinion movies influence museums by giving the audience a visual aid to an informative source. Since my group saw a lot of exhibits today
I chose the film on Veterbrates because it was the one that was most interesting. It showed actual 3d like forms of prehistoric land and sea animals. Ehey described what they looked like, how they evolved and what eventually caused their extinction. without the movie I do not think that an exhibit like Veterbrates would have really caught my eye. The movie was actually fun to watch. The film included special effects, and of course a good illustrtor to characterize each animals trait or description to a tee.

My Day At the Museum

Today at the Museum was very fun!!!!!! My group included Richelle Hudson and Justin Henderson(just two of my close friends at La Guardia so FAR........) At the museum we found a lot of facts that support Al Gore's theory!!!!!!!! While visiting the Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth we saw all of the evidence, they were supported by Movies,Touch screen computers, and exhibits that allowed us to actually TOUCH them!!!!!!

Some of the facts included:

  • Greehouse gases-solar radiation warms the earth's surface. Some of the heat is radiated back to the atmosphere, where it is trapped by greenhouse gases. The most important greenhouse gas is water vapor. Without it, the earth's average temp. would be below freezing. With it, the planet is warm enough to support life over most the surface.

  • The atmospheric layers are: Thermosphere, Mesosphere, Stratosphere, Trophosphere.

  • Climate recorded in Ice- Glacial ice records the climate of past ages. The Composition of ice itself and of the air bubbles and dust trapped in it record changes in temperature, humidity, atmospheric circulation, volcanic activity, extent of sea ice and even atmospheric pollution by human activity.

  • Evidence from trees- Tree rings are sensitive indicators of annual climate. Thick rings indicate rapid growth during warm, wet years. Thin rinngs represent slow growth, indication of cold dry years. By matching the overlapping sequences from progressivley older trees, a complete tree-ring chronology can be extend back thousands of years.

  • Flood Basalts- Among the major out pourings of lava are huge plains as flood basalt provinces. The enoroumus amounts of volcanic gases injected into the atmosphere may have led to climate changes that cause global mass extinction events.

  • Earthquakes are where plates collide. Suduction zones are places where two of the earth's plates collide, with one descending beneath the other. many earthquakes occur along these zones, usually near the top of the decsending plate, where it meets the overlying mantle.

Blog 2 !!!!!

My favorite meal is fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and candied yams made by the women in my family. This meal is so delicious not only is it made with love but its really tasty. The chicken is brown and crispy, the macaroni is yellow and cheesy and the candied yam is orange and sweet. I would have a leg and a thigh from the fried chicken and a big hand full of macaroni and cheese and candied yams. The smell would catch you as soon as you enter the door, it smells like heaven(I’ am getting hungry). I would be eating it in the dinning room of my house with everyone in my family eating the same meal with enough left over for seconds.

Foods Ive eaten!!!!!

  • September 24, 2007: Bacon Cheese burger with lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup and mushrooms on a sesame seed bun, handfull of fries and a cranberry apple juice, two cups of ice water, a lolipop, chicken noodle soup and a wild cherry pepsi.

Introduction to Blog 1

I have chosen Blog 1: What kinds of foods do you usually eat?Describe what you ate at each meal, and in between, for the last three days, be sure to include all drinks (including cofee, tea, and water) and estimate the size of portions. The kinds of food I usually eat reside heavily inthe Black American culture. The food most prominet in my culture is fried chicken, maccaroni and chesse, collard greens and an array of other delicious foods(gettin hungy just thinking about it). although these foods are very tasty it is easy to get caught up in a fatty and unhealthy way of living. so what my family does is incorporate one or two vegetables within the fatty foods to balance a stable diet.

About La'Relle

My name is La’Relle Janae Halton and I was born and raised on Fordham Road in the Bronx. I was born on October 17, 1989 which means that in just one month I will finally be legal. I currently live at home with my mom, dad, grandparents and my younger brother. My hobbies include reading fictional books, dancing. Reading as a hobby was something that both I and my mother adore. We can both finish a great novel in just one day. My mom made reading so much fun to me, she taught me that books can take you away to worlds very different from my own. Dancing as a hobby came to me at the age of four, I have many experiences in various types of dancing such as ballet, jazz, tap, modern, hip hop and just recently I started taking belly dance classes. For a long time I even wanted to become a professional choreographer but it just was my calling. My main interest in life is animals, anything dealing with animals I absolutely love. Being at the young age of five I knew in my heart that I wanted to be veterinarian, but I never knew what skills I needed to fulfill my dream. Growing up I had any and every animal you could ever imagine. I even watched every documentary on Animal Planet and one show that really caught my eye was Animal Cops in New York. That show really opened my eyes as to how many animals get abused daily that when I get older I could possibly be able to help. Animal cops in New York showed beaten and malnourished animals they find around the city and they’re growth after they have been rescued and ultimately they’re adoption. But I’m willing to wait before I jump into Pre-Vet as a major so I can learn more about that career choice.
I’m currently attending La Guardia Community College as a rising freshman and my major is Liberal arts Social Sciences and Humanities. My number one goal in life is to be successful and to be happy with my career in the future. This semester I’ m definitely looking forward to improving my writing and to be able to expand my ability to write my papers more efficiently. The difficulties that I believe I will have with this class is being able to elaborate more on my topics when writing a paper, meaning that I have trouble being more detailed in what I’m writing. Hopefully taking this course will eliminate many or all the problems I encounter when writing a paper.
